Reinforced Concrete Design Review Guide: Beams, Columns & Code Basics

Reinforced Concrete Design (RCD) is one of the heaviest subjects on the Civil Engineering Board Exam. It rewards students who know both the theory and the numbers — and who can move between them quickly. Here's what to prioritize.
Understand the load path first
Every RCD problem is a load path problem: loads travel from slabs to beams, beams to columns, and columns to footings. If you can sketch that path and the moments/shears at each stage, most problems become variations of the same core ideas.
- Dead load vs. live load, and load combinations (e.g. U = 1.2D + 1.6L).
- Factored vs. service loads, and when to use each.
- Strength design (USD) vs. working stress — the exam is strength design.
Beams: the foundation of the subject
Beam problems dominate the exam. Master these before touching anything else:
- Balanced steel ratio and the maximum/minimum limits from the code.
- Singly vs. doubly reinforced sections, and when compression steel is needed.
- Nominal and ultimate moment capacity (Mn, Mu) and the strength reduction factor.
- T-beams and when the compression block falls inside vs. beyond the flange.
Shear is a free-points topic
Shear problems are formula-driven and predictable. Learn the nominal shear strength provided by concrete (Vc), how web reinforcement adds to it, and how to compute stirrup spacing — including the code's maximum spacing rules. Practice these until they're automatic.
Columns and footings
- Tied vs. spiral columns: strength differences and when each is used.
- Interaction of axial load and moment, and the role of eccentricity.
- Short vs. slender columns and when slenderness matters.
- Isolated footings: bearing pressure, punching shear, and the weight of the footing itself.
Code provisions (NSCP) are part of the exam
You don't need to memorize the whole code, but you must know where to look and the commonly tested limits: minimum and maximum steel ratios, cover requirements, development length concepts, and load combination formulas. Knowing which clause applies is half the battle.
