Building Systems Design (BSD) Review Guide
SQB · Updated 2026-08-18 · 6 min read
Building Systems Design (BSD) tests whether you understand how a building actually works as a system — not just how it looks. It blends anthropometrics, building utilities, and increasingly, sustainability. Here's the core of the subject.
Human dimensions and space planning
A lot of BSD questions come back to people: how much space a person needs to move, sit, and work comfortably. Know the standard clearance and dimension figures — circulation widths, seat and table sizes, door clearances — and the logic behind them. When in doubt, think about comfortable movement and safety.
- Standard human dimension ranges and anthropometric data.
- Minimum clearances for corridors, doorways, and stairs.
- How space standards differ by building occupancy.
Green and sustainable building
Sustainability is a growing share of the exam. Understand the core ideas and the benefits framework:
- The principles and benefits of green building (environmental, economic, health).
- Energy efficiency, water efficiency, and materials selection.
- Indoor environmental quality and daylighting.
- Common green building rating systems and their intent.
Building utilities and systems integration
BSD overlaps with mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire-protection systems. You don't need to design them, but you need to understand their role and how they integrate:
- HVAC and why thermal comfort matters.
- Plumbing and drainage fundamentals, including fixture counts.
- Electrical and lighting basics, and emergency power.
- Fire safety: egress, detection, and suppression systems.
- Vertical transportation: stairs, ramps, and elevators.
Building permits and codes
Know the basic regulatory process — permits, approvals, and the authorities involved — and the general intent of building codes. Questions here are usually about process and responsibility rather than deep technical detail.
